This week we read Leprechaun stories.  We compared and contrasted Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato and The Luckiest Leprechaun.  Our new popcorn words were: do, all, there.  The word family we worked on was -in.  The students have been working so hard reading in guided reading groups with me during Daily Five time.  You can see how proud they are when they recognize popcorn words and figure out unfamiliar words.  They are also becoming such good writers!  They are working on their second "story" and will be bringing their first one home soon.  They love to share them with the class. Our math lessons and centers focused on measurement, sorting and addition.  To follow through at home, you can start working on memorizing math facts to build fluency.  In kindergarten we will work on problems up to the sum of 10, but they will have to show fluency with facts to the sum of 5.

Last week we focused on the story Winter Wonderland. The vocabulary words that we discussed were: gentle, vanish, astonishing, sparkle, trembling, howling, twinkle, and sneaky.  Our new popcorn words were: our, here, out. In Jolly Phonics we learned the sounds, qu, ou and made and read words in the -am & -an families.  Our math lessons focused on 2d shapes such as the triangle, square, rectangle, circle, hexagon, & rhombus.  We also continue to work on teen numbers and place value.  If you have been seeing little certificates coming home saying that your child is a "bucket filler" or have heard them talking about this, it is because Mrs. Pesavento, our school Psychologist, has been visiting our classroom.  She is teaching kindergarten students about the importance of positive behavior.  Through stories and discussion, students have learned that they all have an invisible bucket.  When others say kind words, show appreciation, or love, they are filling that person's bucket and that makes both of them feel happy.  Someone is a bucket dipper when they hurt another person with unkind words and actions and that makes both people feel sad.  She will continue to visit the classroom and encourage this positive behavior.
