Find out what's happening in Mrs. Finn's Kindergarten classroom...

Sunday, November 23, 2014

We have had a busy 1st trimester in kindergarten!  In Jolly Phonics we have learned 25 of the 42 sounds.  We have learned 23 sight words and are using these words in our writing and recognizing them in our reading.  In our Michael Heggerty Phonemic Awareness program, we have been working on letter names and sounds, beginning sounds, rhyming, as well as segmenting and substituting sounds.  We have been reading Thanksgiving stories and are working on numbers to 20 during math centers.  Jeff Limberg, a Junior Achievement volunteer, started teaching in our classroom last week and will be teaching a total of 5 lessons to our class between November and January.  To learn more about the Junior Achievement program, please visit www.juniorachievement.org. Remember, this week the students only have school on Monday, November 24th and Tuesday, November 25th.  Wishing all of you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Last week we read the story Stellaluna and introduced the words curious, swooped, grasped & anxious.  We also sequenced the events of the story.  Our new popcorn words were: did & not.  In Jolly Phonics we learned the sounds for the letters b & j.  The letter we worked on in handwriting was letter Cc. In math we have been ordering and comparing numbers to 10.  Some of the lessons included finding 1 & 2 more and 1 & 2 less.  We ended the week with a costume parade and classroom party. Thank you to all of the parents who took the time to come to the parade and party and to those that planned and donated items for the party.  The students had a great time!  I also enjoyed meeting with each of you for parent teacher conferences!                                     A Peek At Next Week
