This week we worked on the story, Whistle For Willie by Ezra Jack Keats. In this story, the main character, Peter, was determined to whistle.  He keep trying until he could do it.  The students thought of something that was hard for them to do, but were determined to do. The vocabulary words from this story were: whirl, scramble, determined & proud.  In Jolly Phonics we learned the sounds for the letters e & h.   We have been using the sounds we have learned so far to make and read words.  Our new popcorn words were big & my. In handwriting we printed the letters Ll & Ii.  During math centers, our focus was on the numbers 0-5.  Students completed activities to work on number formation & recognition, counting, more, fewer, & same, and ordering numbers 0-5.  Please continue to reinforce these skills and concepts at home. Have a great weekend!                                       A Peek At Next Week

This week we read the story, Friends at School. The vocabulary words that came from this story were:enjoy, gooey, container & scrumptious.  The new popcorn words this week were in & see and in Jolly Phonics we learned the sounds for c,k & e.  In handwriting we have been focusing on printing numbers 1-5 & the letter L l. Please help your child practice printing his/her first name and the numbers 1-5 in fun ways at home.  During Daily Five reading centers, the students have been engaged in read to self, listen to reading (computers & listening center) and worked with Ms. Lori and myself in small groups. During math time we do calendar each day and have been working on understanding the concept of more, fewer and same.  We are also determining "how many more?" or "how many fewer" when comparing objects up to 5.  The students also completed their MAPS testing this week on the computer and the magazine drive fundraiser began.  Have a great weekend!

This week we read the story, My Friends, by Taro Gomi.  We learned the vocabulary words: creature, imitate, companion, & explore.  The new popcorn words we learned were I & it.  In Jolly Phonics we learned the sounds that i & p make and started making words using the letters s, a, t, i, p. We practiced building stamina for "read to self" and talked about another center of daily 5, "listen to reading".  The students learned how to use the listening center in our classroom and also worked on one of our computer reading programs, The Imagination Station.  In math we worked on printing numbers 1-5 and counting objects to 5 with 1-1 correspondence.

We have had a great 7 days of school!  The students have been busy learning about their new school and classroom.  We are getting routines in place and getting into the curriculum. In reading we read the story, Me On The Map, and learned how maps can help people.  The vocabulary words that we learned from the story were: town, state, map, and country.  The students drew a map of their bedroom in their journal. Our very first popcorn word this week was, a.  In our phonemic awareness program we are working on letter & sound recognition, rhyming, beginning sounds, adding and deleting phonemes, and compound words.  In Jolly Phonics we have learned the sound and action for the letters s, a, & t. During math time we have been working on counting and writing numbers.  We have also launched our daily five routine by trying to build stamina doing "read to self".  We talked about the 3 ways to read a book: read the words, read the pictures and retell the story.  I look forward to discussing our kindergarten program with you at Curriculum Night on Monday, September 8th at 6:00 p.m.  Have a great weekend!
