This week we finished up our Making Meaning and Michael Heggerty programs.  We also completed all 95 popcorn words for the year and now will continue to review and practice them.  We have done a lot of activities with color words.  The students have been busy writing in their journals and reading in guided reading groups with me.  It is amazing to see how far they have come!  In math we have continued to work on centers to review math concepts taught throughout the year.  This week students sorted 3d shapes, worked on missing number, practiced counting by 5's, addition, subtraction, starfall math and math apps on the iPad.

We have been exploring text features of nonfiction books, such as tables of contents, indexes, chapter headings, and photographs.  Students have been using wondering and making connections to make sense of texts.  The popcorn words we have been learning are color words such as: red, blue, yellow, pink, black, orange, white, & brown.  We've been making words in the short u word families, -un, -ug, -um, -ub.  In math students have been working at math centers on addition and subtraction fluency, shapes, numbers, counting, patterns, etc.

This week in reading, we practiced "wondering" while we read nonfiction stories about a veterinarian and a tiger cub. The new vocabulary words that came from the stories were: wild, tame, creep, pounce.  The word family we worked with was -ock and the popcorn words were: was, saw, are & well.  We have been working on 3 letter bends such as scr, str, squ, spr, & spl. In math we have been working a lot on subtraction and building fluency with math facts within 5.  We took a fun field trip to the DuPage Children's Museum.  It was a great week!  On Wednesday next week, the students will do their Aims web testing on letter sound fluency, phoneme segmentation fluency, missing number and quantity discrimination (both with numbers to 10)
